Making a Difference!

On Friday October 8 2010, our school, Balrothery National School, organised a Sale of Work for the street children of Varanasi, India. The sale of work was organised to provide help for the Jeevan Ka Skool in Varanasi. In India, school is the one thing that children look forward to and so we wanted to ensure that all the children of Varanasi were able to get an education. Mrs. O’Connor informed us of the situation and then asked for 5 and 6 class to help her organise the Sale of Work. We had to help set up all the tables in the gym, bringing in tonnes of toys and cakes!
As soon as the clock struck 11 o’clock on Friday parents arrived. There were what looked like a hundred tables covered in toys, books and best of all, all the cakes and treats all of which was kindly donated by the students, teachers and parents of Balrothery N.S., not to mention Mrs. O’Connor herself who made 54 pots of jam! The children of 5 and 6 class helped selling all the produce as well as helping the younger children in the school buy their toys, books and treats.
When the sale of work was over and the gym was cleaned up the children of 5 and 6 class walked tiredly back to their class. It was a hard day but a day we will never forget and one of the best days of school ever.
To make things even better we were delighted when Mrs. O’Connor came back to the school on Monday to tell us that we had raised an unbelievable €2128! It was such a great feeling knowing that our work helped to raise all that money. From the projects we completed on Varanasi we know that the money is extremely important and that it will really help the lives of all children of Jeevan Ka Skool.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who donated money, cakes, toys etc. and especially to Mrs. O’Connor for organising such a brilliant day!
